[ Listening skills to understand customers’ needs ]

Client: a content provider for web sites and mobile sites

The client wished to enhance negotiation skills of their staff in the sales department to generate more business. Training programs that the company had provided to its employees in the past were focused on acquiring knowledge. They failed to provide them with hands-on, practical techniques and tips in day-to-day business activities. As employees hardly retained the knowledge they picked up in the sessions, management was beginning to feel those training programs were simply a waste of time and money.

We learned from interviews with the client that they had used generic, packaged training programs—on leadership and on management. They had neither set specific expectations or goals for participants beforehand nor assessed the training effects afterward. Therefore, their training sessions turned into study sessions, producing no useful tools for participants.

The first step we took was to identify what it takes to enhance negotiation skills among sales staff. We came to know that the sales staff tended to provide customers with more product functions, but failed to understand customers’ needs. Based on this finding, we proposed a listening skills training to understand customers’ needs.

As this program was designed to give tangible tools to participants, it was easy to appraise their skill levels before and after the session. After the training, the sales staffers began to perform their daily sales activities more effectively. In the past, when a customer rejected their proposal, they did not know why. Today, even when a customer rejects their proposal at the first meeting, they can successfully pitch it at the next meeting with that customer. Their customer relationships have improved significantly and their sales performance has become robust.

Testimonial by a participant in the “Listening Skills” training program

Most of the training sessions I participated in before were focused on motivational training. Those sessions served to make me feel highly motivated and seemed to have benefited me, albeit temporarily. But I had hard time relating what was presented in those sessions to my daily work. I did not know how to put theory into practice. The training program that US-JAPAN CONSULTING provided for us was focused on developing practical skills. I can apply the skills I learned to routine tasks. Moreover, as I can see the results on the spot, I keep improving the skills on my own. This has given me self-confidence.

Testimonial by a Japanese employee of a U.S. company

I was confident in my ability to communicate in English. I managed to use English fairly well for business. One day, I was told to do make sales calls to American prospects as part of a new assignment. I had communicated in English with people I knew inside and outside the company but I had never used English to sell something to someone I had never met. I was completely at a loss what to do.

I became nervous as I did not know what to say in an initial phone call to prospective customers. I was not sure if that person would listen to what I had to say, or if she or he would direct me to the right person in the organization.

In fact, when I placed the first call to a prospective customer, I was unable to go beyond the initial introduction which lasted for only 10 seconds. Talk about sales call! This experience deeply depressed me as I had thought I was good at English.

Then I took an English proficiency training course that US-JAPAN CONSULTING offered and I found its “Powerful English Telephone Skills” program particularly useful. It showed me how to use English-speaking skills effectively to overcome challenges and difficulties I might have in sales calls. This has greatly enhanced my confidence level of speaking English in everyday business. There are all kinds of English training courses available but I have never heard of such a useful course that offers tangible, practical benefits to business people. This is the ultimate training program to improve practical English proficiency.
